During his Wanderlust concert, Trevor Hall would explain the stories behind his songs. He shared the Hawaiian story of the Bowl of Light and how we all start off with this bowl of light, and then each time anything negative is said or there is a judgment made, a stone goes into our bowl. Eventually, there is no more light. However, he shared that you can always flip your bowl over and start again. The song is beautiful.
Our words do have power. Words can cause harm when used without pause and intention. As a child, a verbal taunt we all remember was, “Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never hurt me”. It was actually a denial and affirmation of sorts that gave the victim some defense against the bully. However, until we come to know and understand the Truth of who we are, words will have power over us.
In Unity, we are blessed to have spiritual principals to help us know, really know our Truth. We do have a ‘Bowl of Light’ that the world needs. We are the peacemakers needed to heal because we are imbued with the divine essence of spirit. We all have the power to use our words for the greater good.
We are now fully experiencing the season of autumn. Take some time to watch the leaves fall to the ground, enjoy the cool, crisp air, and speak some words of gratitude for your life and for the lives of those you love. Empty your bowl if it needs emptying, and know that each and every day is a gift from God to start over.
“Don’t you carry stones in your bowl of light!”
